Joe/Jo Bowler of the Year has been awarded to a New Haven County Bowler since 1981. The very first Joe Bowler award winner, 71-year old Frank Nichols, was cited for his sportsmanship, attitude, competitive spirit and a perfect attendance record. He was respected by all the members of the leagues in which he bowled.

In this spirit and meaning, the Joe/Jo Bowler of the Year award has carried forward from year to year, awarded not necessarily to the highest average bowlers in the County, but instead, to the bowler who best demonstrates only the highest qualities in attitude and sportsmanship. Bowlers from within New Haven County are encouraged to submit their nominee for Joe/Jo Bowler of the Year each and every year.
